Dream Pillows
Dream pillows have been used for centuries as a natural aid for relaxation and to encourage restful sleep. Filled with a carefully chosen mixture of herbs and essential oils, these small pillows release a gentle fragrance believed to enhance the quality of dreams and promote a peaceful sleeping environment. Making your own dream pillows allows you to customize the scent and fabric, creating a personal sleep companion or a heartfelt gift that carries the soothing touch of your hands.
Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or new to sewing, this project is accessible, enjoyable, and rewarding.

Materials You’ll Need
To embark on your dream pillow creation, gather the following supplies:
- Flannel Fabric: 2 pieces, each 4″x6″. Feel free to adjust the size based on your preference.
- Herbs: 1 cup each of lavender, patchouli, lemon balm, and hops, plus 1/2 cup of rosemary for a calming herbal blend.
- Essential Oils: 4 drops of sandalwood, 6 drops of lavender, and 6 drops of orange essential oil for a soothing aroma.
- Sewing Supplies: Needle and thread, or a sewing machine. Craft/fabric glue is an alternative for non-sewers.
- Jar with Lid: For mixing and infusing the herbs and oils.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Dream Pillows
Preparing the Herbal Mixture
- Mix the Herbs: Combine the lavender, patchouli, lemon balm, hops, and rosemary in your jar. Secure the lid tightly and shake to blend. Let sit for 1-2 days to allow the herbs to meld.
- Add Essential Oils: Open the jar and add the sandalwood, lavender, and orange essential oils. Replace the lid, shake well, and let the mixture infuse for another 1-2 days.
Crafting the Pillow
- Sewing the Fabric: Place the two pieces of flannel fabric with the right sides facing each other. Sew along three sides and part of the fourth, leaving an opening for filling.
- Turning and Filling: Turn the fabric right side out so that the seams are on the inside. Fill the pouch with your aromatic herbal mixture.
- Sealing the Pillow: Stitch the open side closed, securing the herbs inside. If sewing isn’t your forte, carefully use craft/fabric glue to seal the edges.
Tips for Dream Pillow Success
- Fabric Choice: Flannel is soft and cozy, but feel free to experiment with other fabrics. Just ensure it’s breathable to allow the fragrance to escape.
- Refreshing the Scent: Over time, the aroma may fade. Gently squeeze the pillow to release more fragrance or add a few extra drops of essential oil.
- Customizing: Play with different herb and oil combinations to find your perfect sleep scent. Consider adding chamomile for extra relaxation.
