Ingredients for Your Hungarian Adventure

  • Stew Beef: 4 lbs, cut into 2″ cubes, ready to melt in your mouth.
  • Cooking Oil: Enough to brown the beef to perfection.
  • Seasonings: Salt, paprika, and pepper to taste, building the foundation of flavor.
  • Garlic: 4 cloves, minced, for that essential aromatic kick.
  • Tomato Paste: 2 cans, thickening the stew and adding depth.
  • Allspice: 8 cloves, introducing a warm, aromatic complexity.
  • Water: 1 cup, to help meld the flavors together.
  • Potatoes: 4 large, quartered, adding heartiness to the dish.

Crafting Your Goulash Masterpiece

Browning the Beef

  1. Sizzle and Season: Start by browning the stew beef in cooking oil in a large skillet. Once browned, season with salt, paprika, and pepper, ensuring each piece is well-coated with the spices.

Creating the Flavorful Base

  1. Mix and Simmer: In a small bowl, combine the minced garlic, tomato paste, allspice, and water, stirring until smooth. Add this mixture to the skillet with the beef, blending all the ingredients together.
  2. Low and Slow: Let the goulash simmer for about 2 hours. This slow cooking process allows the flavors to deepen and the beef to become wonderfully tender.

Freezing for Future Delights

Cool and Portion

  1. Chill Before Freezing: Allow the goulash to cool after cooking. This step is crucial to preserve the texture and flavors for freezing.
  2. Divide and Conquer: Portion the goulash into three freezer-safe containers. This way, you can enjoy a Hungarian feast on demand, without any additional prep.

Serving Your Hearty Goulash

From Freezer to Stovetop

  1. Defrost and Dazzle: When you’re ready for a comforting meal, defrost the goulash, then warm it over medium heat for about 15 minutes. This reinvigorates the flavors and brings the goulash back to its mouthwatering glory.

Adding the Final Touch

  1. Potato Perfection: Add the quartered potatoes to the simmering goulash and cook for another 45 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the stew is heated through. The potatoes not only add substance but also absorb the rich flavors of the goulash, making every bite a delight.

Tips for a Perfect Goulash

  • Paprika Power: Don’t shy away from the paprika—it’s the soul of Hungarian goulash, lending it its characteristic color and flavor.
  • Slow Cooker Option: For even more convenience, consider preparing the goulash in a slow cooker after browning the beef, letting it simmer to perfection without needing to watch over it.
  • Serving Suggestions: Pair your goulash with a side of crusty bread or a simple green salad for a complete meal that’s both balanced and comforting.
