How often have you been cleaning out your fridge on garbage day and discovered moldy leftovers hiding in the back of your fridge? Unfortunately, when it comes to leftovers, out of sight means out of mind, and kids don’t necessarily understand that it is a bad idea to push that container of leftover of lasagna behind the milk and cottage cheese container.
Instead, create a designated area of the refrigerator – or even a drawer you might not regularly use, such as a cheese drawer – and designate it the only place anyone can put leftovers, and that nothing else should be placed in that area.
You can even use a bright colored basket, and place all leftover containers in the basket in the fridge.
Leftovers that you can’t see will rarely be consumed, meaning you are just throwing money away. If you think there is a chance you might forget it, pack it immediately in containers for lunches, or pop it into the freezer, being sure to label and date it!
