Not many of us are lucky enough to have a root cellar that is perfect for storing potatoes for longer periods of time. But unless you eat lots of potatoes, chances are your potatoes are going to start sprouting before you end up using them all, especially if you’re buying a large bag of them because it’s usually cheaper to buy them in larger bags than individual.
First of all, if you do have a pantry do store your potatoes there, because generally is a lot darker in there which is a better environment for potatoes.
But there is a really great trick to prevent potatoes from sprouting – simply put an apple in with the potatoes when you store them in your pantry. You do want to make sure that your apple has no bruising or anything that would cause it to go bad while it’s in with the potatoes though. If a bruised apple starts to go rotten, it can impact the quality of all the potatoes.
