So, tie on your apron, and let’s embark on this flavor-filled journey together, ensuring you’ll always have a comforting meal at your fingertips.
Your Culinary Toolkit:
- Oil: 3 tablespoons for sautéing.
- Onion & Garlic: 1 onion and 1 clove, chopped and crushed, to build our flavor foundation.
- Green Pepper: 1 small, chopped, for a fresh crunch.
- Ground Beef: 1 pound, the hearty hero of our chili.
- Spices: 1 tablespoon mild chili powder and 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin, for that quintessential chili warmth.
- Tomato Paste & Canned Tomatoes: 2 tablespoons paste and 1 8-oz can of tomatoes to enrich our sauce.
- Red Kidney Beans: 1 14-oz can, drained, for texture and protein.
Crafting Your Chili Con Carne:
Preparing the Base:
- Begin by heating oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the aromatic trio of garlic, onion, and green pepper, sautéing until they become tender and fragrant.
- Crumble in the ground beef, stirring continuously, until it’s thoroughly browned and no pink remains. This is where our chili starts to take shape.
Adding Depth and Flavor:
- Stir in the chili powder and ground cumin, coating the beef mixture evenly. The spices will begin to release their aromatic oils, infusing the dish with deep, complex flavors.
- Blend in the tomato paste and canned tomatoes, breaking up the tomatoes with your spoon. The sauce will start to thicken and enrich as it simmers.
Bringing It All Together:
- Introduce the red kidney beans to the mix, stirring to combine. Cover your saucepan and let the chili simmer gently for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. This slow cooking process melds the flavors together beautifully, creating a rich, satisfying dish.
Freezing for Future Enjoyment:
- Once your chili con carne has cooled, divide it into freezer-safe containers based on your preferred serving sizes. Seal tightly and freeze, capturing the freshness and flavors for later indulgence.
Serving Your Chili Con Carne:
- On your chosen day, thaw your chili in the refrigerator overnight. Warm it in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally until it bubbles gently. Allow to simmer for about 5 minutes to heat through completely.
