Ingredients for Your Barbecue Masterpiece

  • Butter/Margarine: 1/4 cup, to sauté the onions to golden perfection.
  • Yellow Onions: 2 large, peeled & diced, for that foundational savory sweetness.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: 1/2 cup, adding depth with its rich, umami flavor.
  • Cider or Red Wine Vinegar: 1/2 cup, for that essential tangy kick.
  • Chili Sauce or A1 Sauce: 2 tbsp, to spice things up.
  • Sugar: 1/4 cup, to balance the tang with sweetness.
  • Water: 4 cups, to bring all the ingredients together.

Crafting Your Culinary Creation

Sauté to Perfection

  1. Begin with the Basics: Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then add the diced onions. Sauté them until they’re soft and translucent, laying the foundation for a sauce that’s bursting with flavor.

Simmer and Reduce

  1. Mix and Simmer: Add the Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, chili or A1 sauce, sugar, and water to the sautéed onions. Cover and let everything simmer gently for 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
  2. Uncover and Reduce: Remove the lid, turn up the heat slightly, and bring your sauce to a boil. Let it reduce by about a third, concentrating the flavors into a rich, delectable barbecue sauce.

Freezing for Future Feasting

Cool, Strain, and Freeze

  1. Cool Down: Allow the sauce to cool after reducing. This step is crucial for maintaining the sauce’s quality when freezing.
  2. Strain: To ensure a smooth sauce, strain it to remove the onion pieces. This leaves you with a velvety barbecue sauce that’s ready for freezing.
  3. Portion and Freeze: Divide the sauce into 1-2 cup portions (or whatever size suits your needs) using freezer-safe containers or bags. Label each container with the date, so you know exactly when you made your batch.

From Freezer to Table

Thawing and Heating

  1. Thawing Options: You can thaw your barbecue sauce in the refrigerator or by placing the sealed container in hot water for a quicker option.
  2. Ready to Serve: Once thawed, simply heat the sauce in a saucepan on the stove or in the microwave. Then, it’s ready to slather on your favorite grilled items or to use as a zesty condiment.

Tips for Barbecue Bliss

  • Customize Your Flavor: Feel free to tweak the recipe to your taste, adding more sugar for sweetness, more vinegar for tang, or extra chili sauce for heat.
  • Serving Suggestions: Use your barbecue sauce on grilled chicken, ribs, or as a base for pulled pork. It’s also fantastic as a dipping sauce for fries or to spice up a burger.
  • Make It a Gift: Homemade barbecue sauce makes a thoughtful and delicious gift. Pour it into a nice bottle, add a personalized label, and share the love with friends and family.
