Does your dog beg for food scraps from anyone eating in your house? Not only is a dog begging for food incredibly annoying, it is unhealthy for your dog to be eating table scraps. And lastly, it can be a hard habit to break your dog of. Here are some tips to help prevent your dog from begging for food.
Exercise
Try to exercise your pet right before mealtime so they are tired before the rest of the family eats.
Same mealtime
When your family sits down to eat, feed your pet at the same time. These does two things – keeps them occupied for part of the mealtime and means they are well fed while you are finishing your meal.
Toys
Make sure they have a toy to play with to keep them occupied when humans can’t occupy them.
Treats
Not a good idea for every mealtime, but giving a rawhide treat or bone during meal time when you have company is a great diversion!
Ignore
If your dog continues to beg, completely ignore the dog and don’t even make any eye contact. If they can’t get a response, they will be more inclined to take their interest elsewhere.
Confine
As a last resort, confine your dog outside or in a different room in the house to prevent begging. Reward the dog with good behavior by allowing them to lie down near the dinner table, but when he or she begins begging, you should confine it. Eventually they will learn that no-begging means they get to stay around the family.
Never feed scraps
If you feed your pet scraps at the dinner table, they won’t understand why they get punished the next time they beg.
