A new puppy can quickly be overwhelmed by energetic kids, especially when your puppy has just been separated from his or her mother and siblings. So it is important to introduce your new puppy (or even an older but “new to the family” dog) in a calm and controlled environment so you can watch for any issues on either side.
Avoid rough housing
Don’t allow your kids to immediately launch into rambunctious playtime with a new dog or puppy. Instead, focus on calm.
Gentle play
Encourage gentle interactions, such as petting.
No teasing
Tell your children to never tease, hit or even pretend to hit the puppy. The emotional distress caused by this can have lifelong affects on a small puppy.
No loud noises
Your children should never yell at the puppy and should also avoid making loud noises that could startle him or her.
