Introducing your kids to your new boyfriend’s kids
You have met someone, who also happens to be a single parent. You want to introduce the kids to each other, but what is the best way to do this so you don’t alienate either set of children. Here are some useful tips to make this meeting go as smoothly as possible
- Meet on neutral turf – don’t plan the meeting for your house or his house. Instead, pick somewhere neutral that neither family has ties to.
- Go on family outings with both sets of kids, whether it is to a movie, museum or a trip to a theme park.
- Don’t pressure the kids to like each other. Like kids in any situation, they just might not have anything in common. However, being pressured could turn the situation quickly into one where the kids despise each other
Like with all relationships, how you facilitate the relationship between your new partner and kids and your own children, especially in the early days, can have a serious impact even years from now. So make sure you are doing it on a level your child can accept.
