As with any crime, you should report a case of identity theft to the police. When you go to file, you must bring as much documentation as possible. This would include your credit reports, ID Theft Affidavit (after you have it notarized), collection letters, and any other evidence you have that supports your fraud claim.
Many creditors will not resolve your case until an official police report has been filed. Not all police officers realize that a report can be filed for identity theft, as this is still a fairly new crime for investigators. You will also need a police report for the credit bureaus so they will automatically block fraudulent accounts and bad debts from appearing on your credit report.
Ask the police to check with the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel database. This will allow them to check for other identity theft victims in your area, and see if there is a pattern to the frequency and location of identity thefts.Your case may be given more investigation time if a number of local cases have been reported.
