Memory foam pillows have gained lots of popularity over the past few years because of their hypoallergenic qualities as well as being an excellent pillow for those with back and neck problems. Unfortunately, many of these memory foam pillows come out of their plastic packaging with a very odd chemical type smell, which needs to be aired out before using.
Ideally, you should air out your new memory foam pillow for a couple of days before using. But if you don’t want to wait there are a couple tricks you can use to get the smell out faster.
First you want to take it out of the pillowcase that most memory foam pillows come in. If it comes with two parts, such as a regular pillow with a memory foam pillow overlay, separate them both. An easy way to quickly air out your new pillow, is to open your window and lean that pillow against the window screen, changing sides periodically.
You never want to try airing it out in your dryer or with the hairdryer because the heat can damage the pillow and it is potentially a fire hazard.
You can also add a piece of a fabric softener sheet between the memory foam pillow and the pillowcase as well to help freshen it up.
As a side note, all memory foam pillows, with this curious smell and unless it has not been packaged in plastic.
