Did you know that every year children are seriously injured by fireworks? Before you set off fireworks this 4th of July – or attend fireworks displays put on by friends and family – read these tips so you can prevent problems before they occur.
Are they allowed?
Some places do not permit fireworks displays except the public officially sanctioned ones. In other areas you need a special permit for fireworks. Check with your local fire department to see if there are any restrictions in your area, because penalties for setting them off otherwise can be quite severe.
Are they legal?
People still sell illegal fireworks. Don’t think they are illegal because they are the best, they are illegal because they have a high incidence rate of injuries and even death.
Reliable source?
You only want to buy fireworks from reputable sources. The smaller mom and pop shops could be selling unapproved dangerous fireworks
Where are you firing them?
Never fire off fireworks at peoplem buildings or anything that could catch fire (such as a hedge). Only use them in a clear open space.
Follow directions
It seems like a no-brainer, but many people are injured because they didn’t follow the directions on the package.
Light individually
Don’t stack a bunch and try to light them all before they start shooting off. Set them off one at a time.
Adults only
Don’t let your children set them off, or even light sparklers. Only adults should be involved in firework lightings.
