Always shake off water when you purchase vegetables at a grocery store. While water spraying is necessary to keep fruits and veggies from being dried out and going bad, that extra water, especially on items like romaine and kale, can easily trap a ton of excess water on the produce – water weight you will be paying for at the register. Always shake off those veggies well before placing them in a plastic bag, where the water will then become trapped.
Don’t tie off the end of the produce bag, or seal it with a ziptie, as this can also cause the vegetables to spoil faster when the water can’t escape the bag.
Also be aware of reusable produce bags. Some can absorb water easier than others, and will also ad to your grocery bill.
Excess water can also make your produce spoil faster than normal.
