We have all done it – found that perfect plant, whether it is the tomato plant that produced an abundance of sweet tasting tomatoes or the flowers that attracted the butterflies or was just simply that perfect shade of pink…. then we forget specifically which species or variety it was, or even where we bought it to get more.
Get yourself organized this year. Start a three ring binder with dividers, and start off by deciding how you want to organize – by year, by garden or by variety (fruit / vegetable / flowers). Some people find one method works better than others, so pick the one you feel will work best for you. Don’t worry, you can always change it later.
Each time you plant a seed or buy a new plant, tape the seed packet or tag onto a piece of cardstock that is hole punched, and file it under the appropriate tab. Be sure to include relevant information – where you bought the seed/plant, if it came with other color choices, any tips or advice the person at the gardening center gave you, and most importantly, when and where you planted it.
At the end of the gardening center, go back and make any additional notes. Did it produce a lot or flowers or fruit? Where you happy or disappointed? Anything will help you when it comes time to planting next year.
