Make your own hummingbird nectar

Did you know that commercially available hummingbird nectar isn’t the healthiest option for feeding the hummingbirds that visit your garden? Commercial hummingbird nectar you buy at the store is dyed red with synthetic dyes. So making your own nectar isn’t just a money-saving option, it is also best for the hummingbirds themselves.

To make your own nectar, simply mix one part sugar with four parts water. Stir well so sugar is fully disolved before pouring into the feeder.

You should change the hummingbird feeder nectar 1-2 times per week to keep it fresh for the birds. It will require changing more often in warmer weather. Avoid placing hummingbird feeders in direct sunlight to keep the nectar fresh longer.

Because hummingbirds are drawn to the color red, be sure that when you purchase a humningbird feeder that it is red in color. A red hummingbird feeder is enough to attract hummingbirds, rather than using the red-dyed nectar.
