Soaker hoses are handy for gardeners but soaker hoses usually cost significantly more than their hole-free regular hose counterparts. Fortunately, it is quite easy to make your own. If you have a hose that has sprung a few leaks and isn’t really of much use as a regular hose, turn it into a soaker hose to easily water your garden without having to use a watering can or a watering attachment on a regular hose. Or buy an inexpensive regular hose – after all, it doesn’t matter if it isn’t good quality and springs a few leaks down the road like many cheap hoses do!
Stretch the hose on a hard surface such as a driveway (we don’t recommend using a wooden deck for this job!) and using a small nail and a hammer, puncture small holes every few inches along the hose. You may want to leave several feet at either end of the hose to allow for the hose to run from the tap to the garden – no use wasting water!
Once done, you simply stretch it out in the garden and turn the water on to use. You can also add additional holes if needed once you have it in your garden, if some plants need a little bit more water than others.
