If keeping track of your freezer cooking in an inventory style doesn’t work for you, try using the calendar method instead. It is quite easy, but is best done within a day or two of cooking your month’s worth of meals.
When cooking, make sure you label all your meals well, then also write them on a piece of paper, being sure to note how many of each you have.
Next, use our free printables below, or if you want to go the more expensive route, get a dry erase calendar, and place the dates on it. Next, mark off days when you know you won’t need a freezer meal, such as plans for dinner at a friend’s house, or if you always make a Sunday evening special meal.
Now, start writing down meals on the calendar for the remaining days. You can swap things around if you realize you have a week’s worth of ground beef meals in a row and you want to intersperse them with some chicken or vegetarian meals. You may want to give your family a quick look at it if they have any special requests.
Then, as you go along, cook the meal planned on the day. If you change your mind, such as deciding to have lasagna on a day scheduled for a chicken dish, be sure to swap it on the calendar too, so that when that lasagna day comes up, you aren’t digging through the freezer endlessly wondering where it went.
Using a freezer cooking calendar will help ensure you won’t end up with leftover meals that languish in the freezer for the next year until the big freezer defrost occurs.
