If you have kids, chances are pretty good that you have ended up with CDs and DVDs with scratches in them, that don’t play or constantly skip at certain parts of the playing. Here is a simple trick to help remove those scratches, and all without buying one of those expensive CD scratch remover kits that the stores try to make you buy.
Get a tube of paste toothpaste (not the gel kind). Make sure the brand doesn’t contain freshening “bits” or flavor burst bubbles. Just plain old paste toothpaste is what you want (probably the kind you grew up with as a kid!) If you need to buy a tube, the plain pastes are usually the least expensive, and you can use it for toothpaste when you are done.
Where the scratch appears, put a small dab of paste toothpaste on the disc, slightly more towards the center of the CD. Then using a soft clean cloth or a cotton makeup remover pad, gently rub the toothpaste into the scratch in a single motion from the inside of the disc, straight to the outside. You do not want to rub in circles or sideways, just from the center out to the outside edge in a straight line. Keep doing this until the excess toothpaste is removed. Allow to sit for a 5-10 minutes then play as usual!
