Did you know that there are many more types of chowder other than the traditional clam chowder that most people are familiar with? There’s actually a ton of different ones, including some vegetarian ones and some that have nothing to do with seafood like so many do.
The nice thing about chowder is they are a really hearty soup without having the same kind of consistency as a regular stew. Chowders are much thicker and tend to feel much more filling when you have them because they are very thick soup. Add some crusty bread or rolls and chowder is an entire meal on its own.
So what types of chowder are there?
- Clam chowder
- Corn chowder
- Seafood chowder (usually fish, lobster, shrimp and/or crab)
- Pumpkin or squash
- Sweet potato
- Vegetable
- Chicken
- Mushroom
Next time you were craving a nice chowder for a meal, think about one of the other types of chowder other than the traditional clam chowder and see what you think. Personally, my favourite is corn chowder, especially with some basil added to it.
