If you don’t cook Asian food very often, chances are good that you probably don’t have sesame oil in your pantry. And because oil has a limited shelf life, you might not want the expense of buying it. But what can you substitute for sesame oil?
In a pinch, olive oil makes the best substitute. If you don’t have olive oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil or canola oil can be subtituted. Because sesame oil has a nuttier flavor, a nut or seed oil would be your best option after olive oil.
If you decide to purchase sesame oil in the future, you can keep it in the refrigerator so it lasts longer.
