Fish sauce is popular in many Asian cooking recipes, but for those with seafood allergies, they have no choice but to find a substitute for fish sauce. But what would make a decent substitute?
One popular substitute is to just swap out the fish sauce for low sodium soy sauce. But it definitely leaves some flavor off the table.
A better substitute is mixing half and half hoisin sauce and soy sauce. This will give a richer flavor than soy sauce alone. However, do check the label, as sometimes hoisin sauce, depending on the region produced, is actually oyster sauce, or with oyster as one of the ingredients.
Another alternative is a mix of mushroom stock and soy sauce, to give some of the richness that is missing from the fish sauce.
