We have all known the pain of trying to make perfectly round meatballs of uniform size when making a dish that calls for meatballs, such as spaghetti and meatballs. But there’s actually a really handy trick that you can use to make meatballs the perfect size.
Next time you make meatballs, grab your ice cream scoop and use that to make your meatballs. Using the scoop, you’ll scoop out the perfect amount of meat mixture for each meatball and it is almost in a round shape, especially if you chilled the meat mixture beforehand.
If you make a lot of meatballs but you don’t have a meatball scoop, you want to get a 2 ounce ice cream scoop for meatballs. This will make meatballs that are about 2 inches in diameter, which is the most common size of meatballs you find in recipes. You can also use a smaller scoop – such as a smaller ice cream scoop or a larger melon baller, to make 1″ meatballs.
If you still use the same scoop for ice cream, make sure you wash your scoop extremely well before ever using it for anything else. You don’t want to risk transferring bacteria from the raw meat into your ice cream. If you find you’re using the scoop frequently for both, then you might want to consider buying a scoop just for meatballs.
