If you have a recipe that is calling for fresh garlic cloves but you’ve discovered you don’t have any fresh garlic on hand, how much garlic powder do you actually need to make the substitution for the fresh garlic cloves?
For each garlic clove that the recipe is calling for you need to substitute 1/8 of a teaspoon of garlic powder. Do note that the substitution is using garlic powder and not garlic salt.
1 clove = 1/8 tsp
2 cloves = 1/4 tsp
4 cloves= 1/2 tsp
when using garlic powder instead of fresh garlic, you might be missing some of the nuances of the flavor of the fresh garlic, especially if you are sauteing the fresh garlic and not simply adding it into a sauce
When stored properly garlic can last a long time, or you might consider purchasing one of the jars of minced garlic that you can purchase at grocery stores, so you can always have the fresh garlic taste.
