If you find yourself in a pinch and don’t have any baking powder on hand, or you are concerned about commercial baking powder containing ingredients such as aluminum and GMO ingredients, you can easily make it yourself and store it in your baking cupboard indefinitely. Depending on how often you use baking powder, you can make a small amount or a large amount, as the recipe is done in “parts” for your convenience.
2 parts Cream of Tartar
1 part Baking Soda
1 part Arrowroot Powder
Combine ingredients well, and store in an airtight jar or container in your cupboard. Arrowroot powder is becoming more common so if you can’t find it in your grocery store (check Bob’s Red Mill, as it is one of the most popular brands), any healthfood store will carry it.
If you still want to keep store-bought baking powder on hand, you can find aluminum-free baking powder at health food stores. But with this recipe so simple, there is no reason to not make it yourself. And it makes a great gift for any health-conscious baking friends.
