Do
you need sterilized potting soil?
When you go to
purchase potting soil, chances are good that many of the potting
soil mixes in bags are also marketed as being sterilized potting
soil. But do you really need the added expense of sterilized
potting soil, and what exactly does it mean?
Sterilized potting
soil means it has been heated in order to kill any bugs, seeds
(such as from weeds) and any other pests within the soil that
can harm or kill your plants.
It is also worth
noting that sterilized soil is sterilized in a particular
way so that the "good" organisms that are healthy
to plants are still intact within the soil.
If you are planting
in containers, it is recommended you use sterlized potting
soil. This provides an ideal growing environment for your
plants. Sterilized soil is also recommended when you are planting
seeds and seedlings, when plants are at their most delicate
and vulnerable state.
