Have you ever ordered a used book and discovered it smells like an ashtray because the previous owner must have smoked in the same room as the book? Or a book is just decades old and has picked up a musty smell somewhere along the way. But you can definitely get the stinky smells out of books!
Fill a large plastic box (such as a Rubbermaid tote) with a layer of baking soda. Set a wire rack on top (such as a cooling rack for baking) and elevate the edges of it with small blocks. Then place the book in an open position on top of the rack, ensuring that the baking soda is NOT touching the book. Then put the lid on top and let the book sit in the box for a week or two. If the book is thick, open the book to a different section every few days.
