If you have carpet in the same room as a fireplace, you’ve probably accidentally gotten soot on the carpet, whether it was while removing ash from the fireplace, or perhaps the poker or shovel fell onto the carpet. Fortunately, with a couple tricks, you can get soot out without having to get your carpets professionally clean.
First you need to absorb what you can, sprinkle either baking soda or cornstarch onto the carpet area with the soot stain. Allow it to sit for a couple of hours before carefully vacuuming it up.
Next you’ll need to use a small amount of dry-cleaning fluid, which you can purchase at most stores in the cleaning section. Dab a small amounts onto the clean dry cloth then blot the remaining soot. Repeat until the stain is gone then allow to dry. As with any cleaners, test on a small piece of carpet to make sure the dye in your carpet is not affected.
